The consultation process between the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) and my Office has been completed, says the Commissioner for Personal Data, Irini Loizidou Nikolaidou, in a statement.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has carried out an impact assessment on the operation of Closed Circuit Video Surveillance (CCV) in school units to prevent and deal with violence and delinquency, which it submitted to my Office for consultation purposes.

According to with what is mentioned in said impact assessment,

a. Video cameras will be placed at the central entrances and exits of the school units, as well as around them.

b. The recording scope will be limited within the boundaries of the school units and adjacent private or public spaces will not be recorded.

c. The KKBP will be activated during non-operational hours of the school units.

d. Video footage will be stored for a period of 72 hours.

e. Strictly limited access to the video material.

f. Warning signs will be put up for information.

In the light of what was put before me and following yesterday's confirmation of the adoption of my final comments and guidance, I have considered that the impact assessment meets the requirements of Article 35 of the GDPR and, as a result, I approved the installation of PPE in the school units.

Consequently, YPAN as the controller is in a position and can start the relevant activities and processing operations, which were the subject of the submitted impact assessment.

In the first stage, the KKBP operation will be piloted in 10 school units.
