The Department of the Environment begins a campaign to check compliance with obligations for the management of medical waste from medical practices.

In a related announcement it is recalled that according to the Waste Law (L.185(i)/2011) health care service providers (private clinics), as producers of hazardous waste, are obliged to ensure that the infectious and toxic waste they produce are disposed of in licensed medical waste management facilities with which they must adhere to a written cooperation agreement for their proper management.

The Department notes that following a relevant information to the obliged doctors and after a long period of time has been given to comply with the legislation, in the first quarter of 2024 a pan-Cypriot campaign to check the compliance of health providers in clinics to verify the above will begin.

In the event of non-compliance, the inspectors of the Department will take the measures provided for by the legislation, which include an out-of-court settlement of up to €4,000 or the preparation of a report to the Attorney General for criminal prosecution, it is added.
