Case of rape of a 24-year-old in Thessaloniki: In the next 24 hours, Gionis testifies about the circuit in Cyprus

In the next 24 hours, Mr. Gionis will submit in writing what he knows about the involvement of Cypriots and Cyprus as a geographical area in this circuit, said today the AKEL MP Christos Christofidis.

The statement of the AKEL MP is as follows:

We consider the issue that has arisen with the allegations of rape of a 24-year-old in Thessaloniki, the existence of a circuit but also the involvement of Cypriots and Cyprus in this circuit, as very serious.

These allegations come at a time when crimes against women, whether murder, rape or other forms of violence against women, are on the rise.

There have been some specific complaints in Greece about the involvement of Cypriots but also of Cyprus as a geographical area, in these parties, which apparently ended in criminal acts.

I would like to thank the Attorney General for his prompt response. He did contact me immediately and we have discussed with the Attorney General how this case will proceed.

I want to say that I have contacted Mr. Elias Gionis several times, who has made the allegations and who is the man who highlighted the case of the 24-year-old in Thessaloniki, he is also the man who has revealed other criminal acts against women. Conveying to Mr. Gionis and the recommendation of the Attorney General, as he submits in writing what he knows to the Chief of Police in order to further facilitate the investigations.

We have agreed that this will happen in the next 24 hours. In his letter, Mr. Gionis will submit in writing what he knows about the involvement of Cypriots and Cyprus as a geographical area in this circuit.

Of course I want to welcome this fact.

Our role is to highlight such issues, we certainly can not restore justice and the investigative principles of the State, but I want to emphasize once again, our special sensitivity, and the personal and AKEL, in relation with crimes against women, with the crime of rape and human trafficking in particular, which seems to be related to this case.

The Cypriot authorities have a responsibility, and I believe, the will to fully investigate this very serious case, which offends human dignity, human nature, but also human principles and values more broadly.
