Change of leadership in the Hellenic Capital Market Commission - Who will be the successor of Dimitra Kalogirou

The second and last term of Dimitra Kalogirou in the presidency of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission expires on September 15, with the current vice president Dr. George Theocharidis, who was appointed to the position in July 2020, taking over the reins.

The legislation limits the term of office of the chairman of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, with a maximum term of two terms and the Council of Ministers in the next period will finalize the coverage of the two positions.

If the position of the chairman of the ECC can be considered “locked”, the same does not apply to the position of vice-chairman. Information from “P” states that the background and the pressures are intense, as the suitors for the position are many, from executives of the banking and wider financial sector. Without closing the issue, a woman from the banking sector is said to have the lead.

The heritage

Dimitra Kalogirou was appointed chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission in September 2011 and leaves behind a rich work.
“EKK is currently supervising 790 entities compared to 247 in 2011, while more than 100 new applications are in the process of being licensed. “The increase in the number of supervised entities by 219% from 2011 onwards, reflects the undiminished interest that various companies continue to show to be active in the provision of investment services”, she writes in an article that will be published in tomorrow's Sunday edition of “P” .

“Strengthening the supervisory framework and, consequently, ensuring market credibility, is a key condition for the capital market to continue to grow rapidly and to remain a pole of attraction for new investors,” he added.

It is worth noting that the ECC investigation into the collapse of the banking sector is the only one that has led to the punishment, even if it concerns the imposition of fines, on bank executives.

Ms. Kalogirou was assigned the first audit of the procedures for the return of Cypriot citizenship within the framework of the Cyprus Investment Program, which resulted in the well-known conclusion of Kalogirou. She also participated in the research committee under Myron Nikolatos.

The successor

Prior to his appointment as Vice President of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, Dr. George Theocharidis was an Associate Professor of Finance at the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) and Director of the MSc in Financial Services program and has extensive work experience in the wider financial sector.

Previously, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission and a member of the Transitional Board of the Bank of Cyprus.
