An extraordinary general meeting has been called for today by the Cyprus Cheesemakers Association in order to decide on taking measures against the “unilateral”, as it says, decision of the Ministry of Agriculture to increase the quota of goat and sheep milk in the production of halloumi to 19%, from the current 10% .
The meeting is set for 14:00.
In a statement, the Association unequivocally expresses its complete opposition to the Ministry's decision “since it is completely unjustified, has been taken without prior due investigation and essentially leads to the gradual collapse of the sector”.
The Association notes that today it is difficult to meet the quota of 10% goat and sheep milk for the production of halloumi.
He also notes that the competent body for making such a decision is the Ministry of Trade, Energy and Industry and not the Ministry of Agriculture, of Rural Development and Environment.
“Consequently, the Cyprus Cheesemakers' Association calls on the Minister of Trade, Energy and Industry to complete the consultation process with all the parties involved, before taking the final decision”, conclude the Cheesemakers.
