Chief of Police: The decision of the Supreme Court for telecommunications data will be studied

The decision of the Supreme Court for the telecommunication data will be studied “thoroughly”, said on Thursday the Chief of Police, Stelios Papatheodorou, saying that a meeting with the Legal Service will be sought.

Mr. Papatheodorou was invited by journalists to comment on the decision issued by the Supreme Court, according to which the maintenance of telecommunications data by providers is contrary to the regulations of the European Convention. The relevant legislation requires providers to retain user data for six months, while allowing the Police to access them.

Speaking at the Cathedral of the Apostle Barnabas in Nicosia, where he attended the eulogy for October 28, the Chief of Police said that he read today the decision issued by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

“We will study it thoroughly. “We will definitely seek to have a meeting with the Legal Service to see what problems and [problems] arise in any ongoing process or how we are proceeding in relation to the issue of telecommunications data retention,” he said.

Asked if there is a need to pass new legislation, Mr. Papatheodorou said he has no opinion on the matter, but said that “we have to see it with the Legal Service.”

The decision, he continued, speaks of universal preservation of telecommunications data, may, he continued, “there are other ways, we will see how we will overtake or make any suggestions for amendments to any legislation.”

Asked if the investigations into the Azeri case were affected, the Chief of Police said that in most cases, it is not only the telecommunications data that is cited as evidence, but is often part of the testimony.

“We will see with sobriety and composure how we handle matters,” he said.

Finally, when asked to answer if a meeting has been scheduled with the Legal Service, he said that it has not been done yet, however he stated that the meetings with the Legal Service are very frequent.
