Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris announced on Wednesday that more than 12.07 million people, or 79.41% of the target population of the Latin American immunization campaign, had now been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The national program aims to vaccinate 15.20 million citizens, or 80% of the total population, to achieve the so-called collective immunity, or “herd immunity”.
Within a week, the vaccination of adolescents between 12 and 17 years with comorbidities will begin.
The Ministry of Health informed yesterday that in the previous 24 hours 828 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were diagnosed and 25 patients with COVID-19 succumbed. The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Latin America has so far reached 35,176 deaths out of a total of 1,611,917 infections.
However, the cases have decreased by 14% in the last seven days and by 46% in the last fourteen. In 11 of the 16 regions, the positivity index fell to 2% or even lower.
