Chinese authorities are taking precautionary measures of increased surveillance of the movement of people and goods into the territory from states or regions where cases of mpox (the former monkey pox) have been confirmed for six months, the Chinese customs service announced.
As part of these measures, travelers from countries where outbreaks have been recorded will be required to declare in writing whether they have been in contact with symptomatic patients or if they themselves are showing symptoms, while vehicles, containers and goods from countries and regions with outbreaks will are disinfected, according to a press release from the service.
Moreover, Europe is expected to have more imported cases of mpox in the “coming days”, the European branch of the World Health Organization has warned, after the discovery in Sweden of the new, more dangerous, variant of the disease.
“The confirmation of Clade 1 subtype mpox in Sweden clearly reflects the interconnectedness of our world. It is possible that other imported cases of Clade 1 will be recorded in the European region in the coming days and weeks,” the World Health Organization said in a statement.
“The person in question was infected during his stay of in an area of Africa where there has been a significant outbreak of mpox of the Clade 1 subtype,” explained Olivia Wigtsel, the interim head of the Swedish Public Health Authority, during a press conference.
The person infected in Sweden received care and recommendations in accordance with the current regulations, Vigtcell assured.
