Nicosia MP and member of the DIKO Secretariat Chrysis Pantelidis is particularly optimistic about the acceptance of Christodoulidis' candidacy in the electorate that traditionally supports his party. He rejects the possibility of centrifugal tendencies within this body and expresses the certainty that the political framework that will be co-formed with Mr. Christodoulidis will be favored by society. At the same time, he raises the glove that was recently thrown by the leader of DISY and presidential candidate for the president of DIKO, claiming that for years Averof Neophytou was undermining Nikolas Papadopoulos.

< i> What are your expectations for the Central Committee? The first official “yes” to Nikos Christodoulidis at the level of General Secretary, will become a resounding “yes” today at the level of General Secretary?

With the expectation that the decision of the Secretariat and the Executive Office of the party to support the independent candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis will be ratified by the Central Committee, gathering the largest possible majority, so that we can proceed together in the election action. To convince, as much as possible of the society, of the correctness of our decision and the suitability of Mr. Christodoulidis.

What answers did Mr. Christodoulidis give to the complete outline of positions, with the proposals and suggestions of DIKO for all the important issues that you consider to concern the society today?

Mr. Christodoulidis' answer was absolutely satisfactory, as he considered that most of the positions and suggestions of DIKO can be incorporated in the governing program under development. As we had stated in the previous period, Mr. Christodoulidis, as a person, has the qualifications and the qualitative characteristics in order to be supported by DIKO. From the consultation we have had with him in recent days, both the President and the Secretariat are shaping and the political framework, which is necessary in order to build a sound, honest and, above all, effective cooperation of Mr. Christodoulidis with the social and political forces that accompany this effort.

Is the monolithic nature of your party not in danger, Mr. Pantelidis? Are there centrifugal forces within the electorate that traditionally support DIKO in view of the presidential elections?

No, we do not see such centrifugal forces and, in any case, we will work to ensure that such forces do not exist in the future either. The Democratic Party is not overwhelmed by insecurity. The future is what we want to shape and society is what we want to justify. That is why we are happy for the fact that the independent candidacy of Mr. Christodoulidis seems to gather the support, not only of those who “traditionally support DIKO” -as you said- but also of many citizens who traditionally support other parties, as well as citizens who In recent years, they have been some distance from the parties.

The view in favor of an autonomous descent is not at all respected, however, the Secretariat and the Executive Office rightly considered that at this time, in this historical and political situation, what matters is for the Democratic Party to play a leading role in shaping the future and not to be consumed. recording of his party percentage.

Leaks to Kolokasidis

There will be no losses, mainly to George Kolokasidis? Or even to Averof Neophytou?

We have a duty, as I said before, to convince our voters, but also the whole society, of the correctness of our decision and the suitability of Mr. Christodoulidis. We address everyone and everyone, without exception. Beyond that, alas if we consider that there are barriers or that the voters of any party are immovable. On the contrary, we believe that the times when the parties “decided and ordered” and the citizens followed, have passed irrevocably. With respect to the freedom of will and the judgment of every citizen, we propose to the Cypriot people to support the independent candidacy of Mr. Christodoulidis and we are ready to develop an election campaign of arguments, proposals and respect for all.

Even in the case of the election of Nikos Christodoulidis to the Presidency of the Republic, are there no dangers for your party? To lose the leading role of DIKO in the intermediate space?

We do not feel such insecurity. The leading role of the Democratic Party depends on the Democratic Party itself, the correctness of its positions, the effectiveness of its action, its history, principles and consistency. And, I repeat what I said again: The presidential elections are not a competition of parties, but a democratic process of shaping the future of Cyprus. With Mr. Christodoulidis – without certainly canceling the past, either of himself or of our party – there is an understanding of how we want the future. And this is exactly what society is asking for: Proposals for the future of Cyprus and not a confrontation about the past. your space?

Maybe yes, but the point is not to create a perspective for the Center, or for any other political space. The aim is to create a perspective for Cyprus, for the Cypriot people, for our children.

Other independent presidential candidates pledged or never talked about forming a party, but in the end they did. E.g. Vassilios, Lillikas, once Alexis Galanos. Doesn't that worry you?

No. As I said before, we do not govern with insecurity or anxiety about the party scene but with confidence and hope for the future of Cyprus. And woe to us if we base our esteem on a person in the present, based on decisions made by other persons in the past…

You have repeatedly said – and the president of your party and other leaders – that “DIKO receives the messages of society and there is a climate of support for independent, rather than partisan” candidacies. Did you want to go with more “painless” options, despite the party candidacy?

We support a person who has the qualitative characteristics to be the next President of the Republic, a person with whom we have an understanding of the future of our country, a person with a horizontal impact on society, a person with whom we co-shape an integrated political framework, which will include positions and proposals of DIKO. I would not characterize this choice as “painless”. A party candidacy would be painless. But we listen to society, we transcend, we support an independent candidate, a person from a different field and we believe that we can bring hope and perspective to our place. This is what society demands.

DIKO has always been a party of power. It has always been government or co-government. Did these ten years away from power cost your party?

They cost the place. This is the truth. The absence of the Democratic Party from the government cost the place. History shows this. By the way, it is not true that DIKO was “always in power”. We served in the opposition during the five years of Vassilios 'rule, during the five years of Clerides' second term and for the last ten years, as you have already said. Total, twenty years. Perhaps the notion that we were a “ruling party” stems from the fact that, as a ruling party, we had the most successful governments and associated the name of the Democratic Party with the greatest fiscal and social achievements.

Yes we cross the dividing lines of the past

With your former close associate in Parliament and in socio-economic issues, DISY and especially Averof Neophytou, you have come to a complete rupture. But on the other hand, you support someone who claims to be a “proud alarmist” and has been a minister of “the most corrupt government in the country,” as you often say.

First of all, Averof Neophytou was never a “close collaborator” of DIKO. On the contrary, Mr. Neophytou did everything in his power, in the last ten years, either directly or indirectly, in order to undermine Nikolas Papadopoulos and to split and hit the Democratic Party. I recall, for example, what he used a year ago against Nikolas Papadopoulos in the process of electing a Speaker of Parliament. The fact that DIKO, responsibly and wisely, supported specific memorandum obligations of Cyprus and kept our country on a path of fiscal stability in the difficult years after the bankruptcy, is not proof of cooperation with Averof Neophytou, but proof of consistency and seriousness of the Democratic Party . Beyond that, I answer your question in relation to Mr. Christodoulidis: Mr. Christodoulidis, as well as other persons who served as ministers in the current government, such as Messrs. Ioannou, Pamporidis, or the late Zeta Aimilianidou , but also other persons, were NOT judged or ever characterized as corrupt or responsible for the corruption phenomena experienced by the Cypriot society. And this, after all, is confirmed by the very wide acceptance and repercussion that these people have among the Cypriot society, with “first and foremost” Mr. Christodoulidis. The leveling approach that began this period, with the sole aim of criticizing the decision of the Democratic Party to support Mr. Christodoulidis, wrongs those who were not responsible and favors those who did. In any case, society asks us to cross the dividing lines of the past, to overcome stereotypes, to invest in what unites us. And the Democratic Party wants to justify society.
