Between 1980-2022, 5,582 flood deaths were recorded in Europe, with 53 million people (12% of its population) living in potentially susceptible areas. Due to water demand and drought, over 50% of Europe has been affected (2018 – present) and 30% of southern Europe is permanently under water stress. Prolonged periods of dry and hot weather facilitate wildfires, heavy rainfall makes it twice as likely for pathogens to accumulate in water, and cyanobacteria populations increase, compromising water quality.
Investment and Inclusivity
The energy transition in any case should also mean inclusiveness. It means increasing investment in economically weaker regions, which are least responsible for climate change. With the energy and inclusive transition, from 1.2 billion people without access to electricity in 2010, reduced to 675 million in 2021, while at the same time from 3 billion (2010) people without access to clean cooking in 2021, reduced to 2 .3 billion. In terms of jobs, it is worth mentioning the expected increase from 13.7 million (2022), to 38 million (2030) jobs in renewables (+177%).
