& nbsp & nbspInsider/ΚΥΠΕ & nbsp; & nbsp;
The process of securitizing the homes of the deceased living in government shelters for refugees inside the British Bases is expected to be completed in two months, said on Tuesday the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Refugees, Nikos Kettiros.
Speaking & nbsp; after the meeting, & nbsp; Mr. Kettiros & nbsp; initially expressed the Refugee Committee's grief over the death of the Minister of Labor, Zeta Emilianidou, with whom, as he said, the Committee cooperated on several issues concerning the refugee world, especially the victims, the prisoners, the wounded of 1974 and issues related to benefits. He said that the bonuses, which have been discussed a lot, have reached a conclusion, with the contribution of Zeta Emilianidou “and it really is with a lot of sadness and a lot of pain that we heard the bad news today”.
< p>The Commission continued the ex-officio examination & nbsp; of the issue of & nbsp; “victimization of refugees due to the refusal of the Commander of the Bases to proceed with the process of issuing property titles”. The discussion concerned the non-securitization of the plots of some people who died in houses in the self-housing in Dasaki of Achna and in Trachoni of Limassol, which is in the territory of the British Bases.
He said that the new Commander of the Bases & nbsp; had put some obstacles, which were not valid before for these securitizations.
“As a Commission we had made strong performances, we had expressed our very strong protest for her attitude new Commander of the British Bases “said Mr. Kettiros.
He stated that they were informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & nbsp; that the Bases have committed that in two months the process will be completed and the houses will be securitized, the titles will be issued in the names of the deceased so that the transfers to the heirs can be made.
DIKO MP Christos Senekis said that the specific process, “that is, the prior authorization by the current commander of the British Bases, for securitization of state land, is an abusive display of sovereignty, which afflicts and victimizes hundreds of families and should be treated as such. at the highest level “.
He added that they had been informed that & nbsp; British Bases & nbsp; relied on the different legal framework for securitization of deceased beneficiaries, despite the commitment under an agreed regime for the British Base areas to implement & nbsp; – on Cypriot citizens – legislation harmonized with that of the Republic of Cyprus.
“According to the information we have received, there is an ongoing process of adjusting the legislation in order for the securitization to proceed,” he added.
Mr. Senekis said that they asked the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convey to the British High Commissioner the disappointment of the Commission for the fact that the political commander of the Bases, while invited to attend, did not appear & nbsp; “despising a leading institution of the Republic of Cyprus” . He said that this specific behavior of the commander is repeated.
Unallocated and unused plots
The Committee continued the discussion on the process of disposing of the returned plots in self-housing settlements, with Mr. Kettiros expressing their disappointment with the written response of the Minister of Interior, Nikos Nouris, to their decision last February, not to submit within three data on the reasons why 500 beneficiaries, to whom a self-housing plot has been granted, have not yet started the construction of their residence. Mr. Nouris states in his letter that & nbsp; depending on the time required to complete this work as well as the understaffed staff of the District Administrations, this work will be scheduled “in due time”.
A representative of the Nicosia District Administration, told the MPs during the meeting that a large volume of work is required for this process and after attempts to contact some beneficiaries, a problem that arose & nbsp; is that it was not easy to locate as some changed contact details.
It was also said that the contract for the concession of such plots states that the house must be built in a “reasonable period of time”. of the Minister of Interior, saying that “Mr. Nouris tells us that he does not have time to deal with this issue, which concerns the housing of the refugee world.”
“Maybe Mr. Nouris should be concerned whether he should change his priorities & nbsp; and lift refugee policy from the bottom of his priorities, “he added.
He added that “it is not possible to announce pre-election housing policies which, they themselves have abolished. They should, in practice, do things, not in words “.
On the same subject, Mr. Senekis said that as DIKO,” we consider it unthinkable, at a time when the cost of obtaining housing has become an elusive dream for young couples, that there is no political will for the disposal of these plots “.
Meeting with the President and Members of the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Commission also had a meeting with the President and Vice President of the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The President of the Chamber, Augustinos Papathomas, told MPs that a review should be made of the equal burden of sharing the cost of the invasion. He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was important for Turkey. ” that Famagusta, Kyrenia and Morphou were quite developed areas before the invasion and that the refugees had been hit hard. He also said that the property of non-refugees has increased significantly in recent years, while refugees “have nothing to leave to their children” and expressed concern that a two- and three-speed society would not be created in Cyprus.
