    Complaints about public sculptures being ignored… others spring up out of nowhere – The Chamber of Fine Arts condemns any intervention in public works of art

    Any placement, intervention, movement or even removal of public works of art without applying the legal procedures is condemned by today's announcement Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts.

    Addressing the Municipalities and Communities of Cyprus, the Chamber states that it has received numerous complaints from artists, architects, ecologists and citizens of the municipalities who are concerned about “the fate of public sculptures that are ignored” but also about other “that sprout out of nowhere

    As mentioned, the works of art that decorate public spaces and galleries belong to the citizens and not to someone who was in a position to serve his city or village for a period of time.

    “Cultural policy limits you visitors to museums and galleries, places works of art in the wrong places and deprives citizens of their right to contact culture. Public art does not belong to you”, it is noted.

    It is added that with its competence the Chamber of Fine Arts has the obligation to preserve both the intellectual rights of artists and the public cultural heritage pointing out that “we condemn any placement, intervention, movement or even removal of public works of art without applying the legal procedures”. the work it is called upon to perform.

    “Public works of art created at public expense belong to the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus”, the announcement concludes.
