Complaints that they intubate patients outside the Intensive Care Unit due to a lack of beds

Even before the reactions caused by the publication of the naked woman lying helpless in a public hospital bed have stopped, there are enough complaints about patients being intubated in wards outside the Intensive Care Unit of public hospitals, which come to light every day. demonstrating once again the serious and chronic problems faced by our country's public hospitals, with the lack of beds and understaffing of departments.

These are complaints received in the previous days by the Cyprus Patient Associations Federation (OSAK) from relatives of patients – one of them concerns the Nicosia General Hospital – who stated that the excuse put forward by the shift staff was that there was no other place in the ICU of the hospital.

Even though OSAK has informed the relevant complaints to the Organization of State Health Services (OKYpY), so far no response has been received, with the president of the Federation, Mario Koulouma, once again ringing the bell about the serious issues that arise in public hospitals, which create chain problems in the health sector, with patients falling daily victims of the indifference of the agencies involved.

OKYpY seems to close its eyes and ears to what occasionally comes to light, since instead of trying to find solutions to chronic problems, it chooses to sweep them under the carpet, making ephemeral decisions, at the same time talking about isolated incidents . Something that also emerges through the decisions taken on the issue of understaffing, since instead of proceeding with the recruitment of the number of nurses corresponding to each department of our country's hospitals, it chooses to close entire departments, as a result of which there are no available beds , leaving patients out of hospitals.

As Mr. Kouloumas said while speaking to the REPORTER, the policy practiced by OKYPY results in patients being hospitalized in other wards than those they should be hospitalized, while in the case of patients who are intubated outside the ICU, he emphasized that these are patients ?which should have the attention and care of qualified personnel. “It has become tiring to talk about recruiting nurses all the time and always being understaffed. I really can't interpret it,” he said.

Recently, OKYpY has been giving an answer to what they attribute to him for the serious lack of staff and beds, to the increased incidences of infections that fill the hospitals suffocatingly, however, Mr. Kouloumas brings to the fore the proposal of OSAK – which he had submitted to Organization during the pandemic period – for the need to record the availability of beds through a national basis.

As the president of OSAK explained, “a patient cannot go to a public hospital and be told that they are full. We have proposed to OKYPY that the beds be managed further. That is, to stop the phenomenon of having patients occupying beds for more days than they should or having patients who are bedridden because instead of being discharged from the hospital in three days they are bedridden which is negligence, in other cases while they are in hospital for another reason they get infections and stay in longer”.

As can be seen from the complaints and reports of the patients, understaffing causes chain problems in public hospitals, which makes it imperative to find permanent solutions, something that is expected to be discussed next Friday at a meeting held by the OKYpY. with the nurses' unions, who declare that they are at their limits.

The new meeting follows the first broad meeting held last month with representatives of the nurses' unions, the chief officers of each hospital and in the presence of the Regional Directors of the hospitals, where the needs for the nursing staff were recorded.

< p>As the general secretary of PASYNO, Panagiotis Georgiou, told the REPORTER, in the last meeting a convergence of opinions was found on the needs arising in specific Departments, while in other cases there were objections from the OKYpY, for this reason the necessary time was given to form a better image.

Certainly, Mr. Georgiou did not appear particularly optimistic about the outcome of the new meeting, however he expressed the hope that the issue of hospital understaffing would be resolved immediately. “This issue takes us back quite some time and there is always something coming our way that can spoil the data. It is also the fault of the OKYpY policy to reduce the beds because there is no staff, which creates more serious problems,” he said.
