The Ministry of Health is concerned about the rapid increase in cases in China and the fact that the country has opened its borders, said Michalis Hatzipantela today, adding that the mutation that currently exists in this country was detected in Cyprus in August.

In statements at the Famagusta General Hospital and in response to a related question, the Minister replied that “we are concerned about the fact that China has opened its borders and many people will travel around the world”.  “It is an issue that has been troubling us at the Ministry of Health since yesterday,” he said.

We thought, he continued, that “in these days we would have a bit of peace with the corona virus and we would focus on hospitals and infections, but it seems we have to look at this issue as well.  I spoke since the morning with the Advisor of the Ministry of Health regarding mutations , who informed me that the mutation detected in China has been detected in our country since the end of August”.

So, said the Minister of Health “at this moment we should not worry but at the same time we will not be complacent. Today or tomorrow I will ask to speak with the Regional Director of the World Health Organization to find out what other measures are being taken by various countries of the European Union, while we are planning a meeting with the Scientific Advisory Committee on January 2nd to see all the data”.< /p>

He also noted that he does not want to hold the meeting today “so as not to panic the world. In the next 2-3 days we will analyze all the data to give scientists the opportunity to be informed”.

Invited to report whether shortages of antibiotics and antitussives have also been recorded in Cyprus, given the unprecedented wave of respiratory infections throughout Europe, Mr. Hatzipantela said that “there are shortages worldwide, not only in our country.  But we are always in close communication with the officials of the Ministry of Health and sometimes there are personal interventions by me or officials in other countries”.

He also said that he will ask the relevant officials to “report if there are any deficiencies and if there are, I will also talk to my counterpart in Israel, who helped us again, but also to my counterparts in other countries”.

Asked to state whether there will be a meeting in the European Union at the level of Ministers of Health, Mr. Hatzipantela said that “in the morning officials of the Ministry of Health are taking part in a meeting under the umbrella of the EU and at the end of it I will be personally informed by them. There is no other information about a meeting at the level of Ministers of Health,” he said.

For her part, Amalia Hatzigianni, Scientific Director of the Larnaca – Famagusta General Hospitals stated that “today, 17 patients are being treated at the Famagusta Hospital, two of which are in the Intensive Care Unit.  There is a continuous flow of admissions to the covid clinic, however for the time being the situation is under control and depending on the needs the clinic is being strengthened either with nurses or with medical officers”.

He added that “in the last period the average has increased hospitalization of patients with coronavirus because they are elderly people and vulnerable groups, while in addition to the Covid infection there are also other co-morbidities for which hospitalization is indicated to be more prolonged than expected”.

He also stated that “at the same time there is an increase in cases of upper respiratory infections and depending on the needs we are strengthening our departments”.

In a related question, Ms. Hatzigianni replied that “22 patients are being treated at the EDEN Rehabilitation Center in Tersefanou today, while another 11, who are positive for the coronavirus, are in another department where the positive cases are isolated”.

Amalia Hatzigianni made a special reference to ” great importance of the mask in view of respiratory infections” and said that “in combination with the coronavirus it is good to use it”.

When asked about the issue of the TAEP of the General Hospital of Famagusta, she said that the Department “works smoothly. Our doctors and nurses are fighting hard, the waiting time outside the TAEP is very short and priority is given to the serious cases, while the milder ones are examined afterwards”.

  • Good news for the health of the four-year-old-She showed a slight improvement
  • All the prayers for little Nikolas who is fighting-His mother is shocked
  • TAEP is an unruly ship, problems have accumulated, Hatzipantela is absent
