The medical community is concerned about the detection of the Delta + variant of Covid-19 in Cyprus, Amalia Hatzigianni, Scientific Director of the Larnaca-Famagusta General Hospitals, told KYPE.
He added that “today 11 patients with coronavirus are being treated at the Reference Hospital, three of whom are in the Intensive Care Unit, as they need closer monitoring. The youngest patient is 50 years old and the oldest 88 years old, the average age of the patients in the hospital is 68 years, while only three people have completed their coronavirus vaccination regimen “.
He added that “it has been found lately that many young people need intubation despite the fact that medical and paramedical staff are doing everything they can to help them cope with the virus.”
Asked whether the scientists and the medical community are concerned about the fact that the Delta + variant has been identified in two samples in Cyprus, Ms. Hatzigianni replied that “we are definitely worried about the new mutation because we do not know how it will be expressed or how much dispersion it will have in the public. However, we are always on alert and at the same time people are called to continue to observe personal protection measures, ie mask and distances wherever they are “.
