The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Kyriakos Kokkinos, paid an official working visit to Saudi Arabia between 5-8 June 2022, who also led a business mission co-organized by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry. ), in cooperation with the Cyprus-Saudi Arabia Business Association.
According to an announcement, during the visit, Mr. Kokkinos had a private meeting with his counterpart, Minister of Information Technologies and Communications, Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawaha, while he was also received by the Governors of the Digital Governance Authority of the National Cybersecurity Authority and the Information and Communication Technologies Committee of the Kingdom of & nbsp; Of Saudi Arabia. In addition, the Undersecretary visited the King Abdulaziz City National Research Center for Science and Technology and met with the leadership of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) and Arabsat, one of the world's leading satellite service companies, which has already invested millions in Cyprus through Hellas Sat.
The focus of the contacts was, among other things, the expansion of bilateral and regional cooperation in a wide range of areas, including digital governance, telecommunications and space, as well as the role that both countries can play in promoting as a hub for technology, science, innovation and data as well as addressing common challenges.
As mentioned, a key role in the institutionalization of cooperation between the two countries is expected to play a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of cyber security to be signed in the coming months, as well as the pursuit of both sides for & nbsp; Cyprus's accession to the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), a Basel initiative for international cooperation on & nbsp; digital economy and society.
In addition, it was agreed to promote cooperation in research and innovation and in particular in biogenetics, biomedicine and advanced technologies, such as space applications, artificial intelligence and blockchain, through the conclusion of a relevant Memorandum, which will promote participation in joint research projects, exchange of expertise and know-how as well as exchange programs from academia and the research community. Riyad, the Undersecretary of State, analyzed the strategic advantages of Cyprus as an international business center that provides access to both the European and the developed markets.
