COP26 leaders agree to reduce methane emissions

A Global Commitment to Reduce Dangerous Methane Emissions was adopted by more than 80 leaders on the second and final day of the Glasgow Summit of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26.

The EU-US Joint Initiative envisages a 30% reduction in pollutant gas emissions by 2030, compared to 2020 emissions.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said reducing methane was “one of the most effective things we can do” to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At the same Global Commitment presentation, US President Joe Biden spoke of a “game-changing commitment”. As he said, methane is responsible for about half of the increase in Earth temperature we are experiencing today.

A recent United Nations report has suggested that reducing methane emissions, including from agriculture, spills and landfills, is one of the most crucial points in the short-term response to climate change.

Methane is produced when living organisms decompose, and is also found in natural gas. It is stored for a short time in the atmosphere, but causes more overheating than carbon dioxide.

The Commitment, however, is not endorsed by China, India and Russia.

Present at the announcement of the agreement were many of the leaders present at COP26, including President Anastasiadis, as well as the well-known Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

The commitment of the leaders is considered the second major agreement in COP26 after the declaration to end deforestation by 2030.

At the same time, more than 40 leaders have adopted a UK plan to accelerate the worldwide availability of economic and green technology, again by 2030. The technologies initially cover five sectors: energy, transport, steel, hydrogen and agriculture.

Meanwhile, Chinese government's chief climate negotiator Xie Zhenua said top COP26 officials considered it possible to achieve one of the conference's key goals, which is to commit $ 100 billion a year to developed countries in developing countries. people.
