Copernicus Service: This July was the third warmest July in history

This July was one of the hottest times in history, behind only 2019 and 2016, with unusually high temperatures in areas from Finland to the United States, EU scientists said today. It is the latest milestone in a long-term trend. rising temperatures that have resulted in the last seven years being the hottest in the world as greenhouse gas emissions change the Earth's climate.

“If we look at global temperatures, there are changes from year to year or even from month to month,” Freya Vamborg, a senior scientist at the European Union's Climate Change Agency Copernicus, told Reuters.

“But ultimately, the point is that we are seeing a rising temperature trend worldwide, and in most parts of the world,” he said.

Last month, along with July 2020, was the third hottest in history, behind July 2019 and July 2016, according to Copernicus data. It was the second hottest July in Europe since 2010. Copernicus entries go back to 1950 but intersect with other data sets dating back to the mid-19th century.

Many areas were tested by extreme weather last month – confirming the prevailing view among scientists that global warming is making heat waves more likely and harsher, and that a warmer planet will lead to more intense rainfall.

Record-breaking temperatures in the United States and Canada, which began in June, have killed hundreds of people and sparked wildfires. In China, Belgium and Germany, unusually heavy rainfall has caused deadly floods. The tropical north of Australia recorded the highest daily temperature last month, while the temperature over North Africa was higher than normal “almost everywhere”, according to data from Copernicus. Some areas were slightly colder than average, including Germany and parts of Russia.

Ralph Tumi, co-director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London, said the recent record-breaking heatwaves came as no surprise, given the long-term pattern of rising temperatures.
