Coronavirus - Study: Safe mRNA vaccines for cancer patients

Covid-19 mRNA vaccines are just as safe for people with cancer as they are for those without cancer, according to a major US study. According to the study, cancer patients who are vaccinated against coronavirus do not show more or different side effects – they are usually mild whenever they exist – compared to the other vaccinated.

The researchers, led by oncologist Eric Horwitch of Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, who published the study in the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, analyzed data from 1,753 people, including 1.18 who had received two doses of Pfizer vaccine in 2021 and 18% of them were in the treatment phase at the time of their vaccination (surgery, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy).

Some cancer participants reported the usual symptoms after the vaccine (minor injection site pain, muscle or joint pain, fever, chills, headache, nausea, fatigue), in rates similar to those reported by people without cancer. Also, the side effects of those who received anti-cancer immunotherapy were similar to those in the general population.

“Patients, their families and their doctors should find these results absolutely reassuring. We looked at nearly 2,000 patients and found that those with cancer were not at risk for unexpected reactions after being vaccinated, compared with people without cancer. We now have the data and clinical experience of many thousands of cancer patients who have been vaccinated. “We know that mRNA vaccines are safe and absolutely the most effective way to prevent hospitalization and death from Covid-19,” said Dr. Horwitch.

“It is vital that cancer patients be vaccinated against Covid-19 because we know they may be particularly vulnerable to this infection and its consequences, but some people have expressed concerns about possible reactions to the vaccine. Before this study there was not much data, especially for the cancer population, so we made sure to collect and report this information to help both patients and doctors make informed decisions and make mRNA vaccines. “, He added.

“This study shows that cancer patients do not experience a higher rate of complications, which should help to combat misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines, which are safe and should be given without hesitation,” she said. Natalie Cucklander of the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin.
