The Government considers the written statement of Josep Borel yesterday very important, noted the Government Spokesman Kyriakos Kousios, noting that the High Representative of the European Union, highlighted the European dimension of the Cyprus problem and the need to address it in the resolution process. both the acquis communautaire and the ability of the European Union to take decisions without hindrance.
The upgrading of the EU's role in this critical juncture can prove to be decisive, Mr. Kousios pointed out, as our country is and will remain, even after the solution, an EU member with all that entails. That is why we welcome the European Commissioner 's request for the role of the EU to be upgraded and for an observer to be fully involved in the negotiations as soon as possible.
“We would also like to highlight the position of the European Commissioner regarding the interconnection of the Cyprus problem with the wider Euro-Turkish relations. This position is particularly important in the run-up to the European Council on 25-27 March, when the framework of Euro-Turkish relations will be discussed, always keeping in mind both the possibility of sanctions against Turkey and the so-called positive agenda.
“We note that the EU involvement in the process will be to the benefit of the entire Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, ensuring that the principles and values of the EU will be a guarantee for the implementation of the solution,” he concluded.
