Covid19 / Cyprus: Five deaths and 288 new cases from 12,842 tests - 2.24% positivity rate

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 11, 2021:

  • Five people have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 153.
  • 205 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 58 are in serious condition.
  • A total of 12,842 disease detection tests have been performed by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test method.
  • 288 (positivity rate: 2.24%) new cases of COVID-19 were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid test (antigen rapid test), bringing the total number of cases to 27,638 .

The current results are detailed.

 A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

 The five people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

  • A 77-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.
  • An 89-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.
  • A 70-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.
  • An 89-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Nicosia after being transferred from the Agitis nursing home.
  • A woman, 82 years old, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 153, of which:

  • 103 men (67%), and
  • 50 women (33%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 80 years.

B. Patients:

 In total, 205 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 58 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 58 patients who are critical, 29 are intubated, six are admitted to an intravenous intensive care unit and 23 to an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID -19 ( PCR test and rapid antigen test ) :

Of the 12,842 laboratory diagnoses performed today, 3,892 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 8,950 by the antigen rapid test, 288 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 52 cases from 266 samples received through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 20 cases from 1,713 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 2 cases of 112 samples taken as part of a re-examination carried out on the 7th day after the arrival of persons who have returned from the United Kingdom and are in a mandatory restriction in hotels in the Republic.
  • 27 cases from 1,177 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 16 cases from 388 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1 case from 236 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • 170 cases from 8,950 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method.
