Problems in the labor market are faced by technical education graduates because they have more theoretical than practical knowledge and are faced with competition from foreign labor.
In fact, technical education in Cyprus has weaknesses in relation to what the labor market demands and the current trends that are emerging. The authors of the report “The relationship between technical education and the labor market in Cyprus” of the Center for Economic Research of the University of Cyprus note “research has shown that technical education graduates have a relatively fast and smooth entry into the labor market and other employment. The study of the two (Maria Iliofotou and Elias Markatzis) aims to investigate the relationship between technical education and the labor market in Cyprus. In particular, it deals with the main problems faced by technical education graduates during their transition from education to the labor market, the relationship between the knowledge and skills acquired at school and the knowledge and skills necessary in the workplace, the extent to which Technical education succeeds in the task of preparing graduates for the labor market and changes that can facilitate the employment of technical education graduates and their success in the labor market.
Based on the report's findings, “the curriculum has been criticized for overemphasizing theory in relation to practice and for lacking revision to keep pace with current trends.”
