A 49-year-old man seems to have fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam, who reported on Thursday, at the TAE Limassol, that he lost an amount of 260,000 US dollars. Based on the current exchange rate, this corresponds to 234,487 euros.

According to the complaint, in early August, the 49-year-old received a message on his mobile phone that appeared to come from a cryptocurrency exchange, stating that suspicious activity had been observed on the account of and would have to transfer his cryptocurrencies to another account. The complainant was convinced and followed the steps indicated to him, creating a new account at another exchange.

He then received a phone call and was persuaded to convert money he had in bank accounts to cryptocurrencies, as he was told, there was a security risk because his bank accounts were linked to cryptocurrency accounts he created.

The 49-year-old realized he was a victim of fraud when he tried to transfer cryptocurrency to another e-wallet and his balance was zero.

The TAE of Limassol and the Electronic Crime Directorate are investigating the case.
