Christodoulides pressures UN and EU for mobility in Cyprus – He welcomes the Guterres commitment and restores the connection with the Euro-Turkish – It prepares the ground for a new attempt, but it will fail if the Turkish attitude does not change
Almost all opportunities for Ersin Tatar to change his mind and attitude have been exhausted, however the President of the Republic is equally determined for developments in the Cyprus issue. As can be seen from his words to Bloomberg, he does not give up the effort and continues to press for mobility at all levels. In this context, he emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the European Union and will remain so after the solution of the problem. For this reason and any discussion on the Cyprus issue should be fully aligned with European principles and values. After all, lately he often uses the argument that the concerns of the Turkish Cypriots are answered through the European dimension.
Christodoulides' statements show that the ground is being prepared for another cycle of efforts aimed at resumption. The Government considers September as a crucial month, despite the fact that the Turkish Cypriot side has not given any indication of a change of line.
The General Secretariat is asked to solve the riddle of the UN, who knows that the practical steps that can be taken are limited. For this reason, and as we wrote yesterday, the perception began to prevail that developments can come after the so-called elections in the pseudo-state in October 2025. Provided that the Turkish side will diversify its approaches and abandon the attitude of denial.
