PtD: The issue of connectivity is very important

The issue of connectivity with other countries is very important for tourism issues, for economic issues more broadly, for all aspects that concern an island such as our homeland, said the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis, who attended the presentation of the two new Cyprus Airways Airbus A220 aircraft.

The President of the Republic was given a tour of one of the new aircraft, which burn less fuel and therefore emit less pollutants. “You realize when we talk about an island, the issue of connectivity is extremely important for tourism issues, for economic issues more broadly, for all aspects that concern an island such as our homeland,” said President Christodoulidis, noting that “I am here precisely to support this effort and to congratulate the company as well.

“It's interesting,” he continued, “that we are joined by people from Airbus, who have built this new model airplane, which also reflects today's needs with all these issues that we are discussing and need to take action on, such as environmental protection, safety issues, speed range, etc. and we are here to give a vote of confidence on the part of the government”. As he said, “we have agreed that we will meet to see in particular in some destinations where the Republic of Cyprus as a country does not have connectivity to see how we can synchronize our actions so that any gaps that exist are covered.

“All the governments”, he noted, “throughout time and very correctly have developed and presented action plans to attract companies to Cyprus, more flights to deal with this existing problem of connectivity and these efforts will be continued by our current government”.

When asked by a journalist if he will travel on the new aircraft, President Christodoulidis answered of course and noted that “a few days ago he had gone on a commercial flight to Brussels and returned on a commercial flight from Brussels and you understand he said that a city with which Cyprus does not have direct flights and there is this great need not only for state officials and public officials”. He noted that the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union is coming in the first half of 2026, “Brussels is a city that we have to see how we deal with this problem that there are no direct flights”.
