Cyprus / Covid19: Five deaths and 2,200 new cases - 257 patients hospitalized, at 2.1% positivity rate

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 18, 2022 :

  • 5 people died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 689.
  • 257 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 89 are in serious condition. 65% of patients do not have a history of vaccination.
  • 17 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized in intensive care due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 104,965 disease detection tests have been performed with the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test method.
  • 2,200 (positivity rate: 2.1%) new cases of COVID-19 were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 230,856.

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

The 5 people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 disease, relate to:

– An 89-year-old man who died on January 17 at the Nicosia General Hospital.

– A man, 90 years old, who ended up on January 18 at the General Hospital of Famagusta.

– A woman, aged 86, who ended up on January 18 at Paphos General Hospital.

– A 67-year-old man, who died on January 18 at the Limassol General Hospital.

– An 83-year-old man who died on January 18 at the Limassol General Hospital.

Thus, the total number of final causes of COVID-19 disease is 689, of which:

  • 434 men (63%), and
  • 255 women (37%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 257 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 89 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 89 patients who are in serious condition, 38 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an intravenous intensive care unit and 47 in an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID -19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 104,965 diagnoses made, 8,483 were made by molecular method (PCR) and 96,482 by the method of antigen rapid test, 2200 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 74 cases from 1,263 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 54 cases from 2,607 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 336 cases from 4,034 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 38 cases from 388 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,050 cases from 45,251 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 642 cases from 51,231 samples that were examined by the method of antigen rapid test through the program of the Ministry of Health.

In addition, the following tests were performed, without detecting a case:

  • 6 cases from 191 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • cases of 0 samples taken as part of closed structure tests.
