Cyprus / Covid19: Four deaths, 259 new cases - In 197 the patients

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 12, 2021:

– Four people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 157.

– 197 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 58 are in serious condition.

– A total of 13,231 disease detection tests have been performed by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid detection method (antigen rapid test).

– 259 (positivity rate: 1.96%) new cases of COVID-19 disease were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid test (antigen rapid test), bringing the total number of cases to 27,897 .

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

The four people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

– A man, aged 60, with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.

– A man, 78 years old, without mentioning underlying diseases in the death certificate, which ended up in the Troodos Regional Hospital.

– A 91-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.

– A woman, aged 84, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta.

Thus, the total number of final causes of COVID-19 disease is 157, of which:

106 men (68%), and

– 51 women (32%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 80 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 197 COVID-19 patients are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 58 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 58 patients who are critical, 30 are intubated, eight are admitted to an intravenous intensive care unit and 20 to an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test) :

Of the 13,231 laboratory diagnoses performed today, 2,790 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 10,441 by the antigen rapid test, 259 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 72 cases from 497 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 3 cases of 566 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 31 cases from 1,013 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 18 cases from 354 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1 case from 242 samples taken under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • 1 case of 10 samples taken in the context of the control of the Cyprus Basketball Federation and the Cyprus Volleyball Federation.
  • 133 cases from 10,441 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • 108 samples taken as part of a re-inspection carried out on the 7th day after the arrival of persons who have returned from the United Kingdom and are in a mandatory restriction in hotels in the Republic.
