Cyprus / Covid19: Three deaths and 2,351 cases from 95,740 tests - 270 patients hospitalized

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 15, 2022 :

  • 3 people died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 673.
  • 270 COVID-19 patients are being treated, of which 88 are in serious condition. 74.08% of patients do not have a history of vaccination.
  • 20 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized in a severe condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 95,740 disease detection tests have been performed with the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test method.
  • 2,351 (positivity rate: 2.46%) new cases of COVID-19 were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 223,767.

The current results are detailed. 

A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

The 3 people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 disease, relate to:

– An 88-year-old man who died on January 14 at the Limassol General Hospital.

– A 62-year-old man, who ended up on January 15 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital.

– An 88-year-old man who died on January 15 at the General Hospital of Famagusta.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 675, of which:

  • 425 men (63%), and
  • 250 women (37%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 270 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 88 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 88 patients who are in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an intravenous intensive care unit and 56 in an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID -19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 95,740 diagnoses made, 9,371 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 86,369 by the antigen rapid test method, 2351 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 178 cases from 1,856 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 42 cases from 2,641 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 377 cases from 4,395 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 34 cases from 307 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 971 cases from 49,505 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 747 cases from 36,864 samples that were examined by the method of antigen rapid test through the program of the Ministry of Health.
  • 2 cases from 172 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
