Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID -19 disease

The Ministry of Health announces that today, February 8, 2021:

  • Two people have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 214.
  • 103 COVID-19 patients are being treated, of which 34 are in serious condition.
  • A total of 34,739 disease detection tests have been performed by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid detection method (antigen rapid test).
  • 105 (positivity rate: 0.30%) new cases of COVID-19 disease were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 31,864 .

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

The two people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

  • An 89-year-old man with underlying diseases, who ended up at the Limassol General Hospital.
  • A 93-year-old man with underlying diseases, who ended up at the Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 214, of which:

  • 145 men (68%), and
  • 69 women (32%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 79 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 103 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 34 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 34 patients who are critical, 19 are intubated, five are admitted to an intravenous intensive care unit and 10 to an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID -19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 34,739 laboratory diagnoses performed today, 2,283 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 32,456 by the antigen rapid test, 105 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 18 cases from 218 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 7 cases from 753 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 5 cases from 288 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 7 cases from 501 samples tested by the method of antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories.
  • 68 cases from 31,955 samples that were examined by the method of antigen rapid test through the program of the Ministry of Health.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • 804 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 220 samples taken under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
