Cyprus: Lut prepares suitcases

Mobility in view of the Cyprus issue. All indications in the foreground and background converge on the fact that the engines are about to ignite the problem, although the pace at which things are moving shows that there is no rush. What is certain is that the announcement of the date for the informal pentamer will be made within the week. Despite the certainty of an announcement in the previous days, however, this did not happen, for reasons known only to the United Nations.

According to our information, the parties have been informed about the date and place of the meeting and according to what we have been informed, the appointment will most likely take place within the last week of April, in Geneva and not in New York, as was the original intention. .

With the closing of the appointment, a new tour of the UN Secretary General's special envoy, Jane Hall Luth, is expected to begin in Cyprus for a new round of contacts with the two leaders, preparing the ground for the informal five-party meeting. This is probably expected in the first ten days of March.

At the same time in Nicosia there is intense mobility. Over the weekend, President Anastasiadis telephoned Emanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen. According to the information of the Government Spokesman Kyriakos Kousiou, in the context of their regular contacts, the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emanuel Macron yesterday at noon.

During their conversation, the two Presidents exchanged views on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, in relation to the expected convening of the informal “5 + 1” meeting, the purpose of which will be to reach an agreement on re-launching the negotiation process.

According to the Government Spokesman, President Anastasiadis conveyed to his interlocutor his readiness to participate in substantive talks as soon as possible under the auspices of the UN Secretary General, from where they had remained at the Crans Montana Conference.

“The goal of our side, the President of the Republic underlined, is always to achieve a comprehensive, viable and lasting solution of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation based on UN Security Council resolutions, as well as the principles and values of the European Union. “Given that France is one of the Permanent Members of the Security Council, President Anastasiadis highlighted the role that Paris can play, in particular on security issues and the implementation of the agreement on the settlement of the Cyprus problem.”

According to Kyriakos Kousios, President Macron assured of France's full support for the resumption of negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles and values.

He added that the two leaders also had the opportunity to discuss issues related to the forthcoming European Councils. “President Macron reiterated Paris' commitment to the strategically important Cyprus-France relationship, which aims to jointly address challenges in the Mediterranean basin, as the two countries share the same vision for peace and stability in the wider region,” he said. He also referred to the excellent and close cooperation between the two countries on a wide range of issues, including those that are on the European agenda and will soon concern the Heads of State and Government of the “27”.

Regarding the telephone communication with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Layen, the Government Spokesman stated that during their communication they had an exchange of views on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue on the occasion of the decision of the UN Secretary General to convene an informal meeting. for Cyprus, with the aim of resuming substantive talks from where they remained in Crans Montana and with the aim of resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions and EU principles and values.
