Cyprus: Lut prepares suitcases

Mobility in view of the Cyprus issue. All indications in the foreground and background converge on the fact that the engines are about to ignite the problem, although the pace at which things are moving shows that there is no rush. What is certain is that the announcement of the date for the informal pentamer will be made within the week. Despite the certainty of an announcement in the previous days, however, this did not happen, for reasons known only to the United Nations.

According to our information, the parties have been informed about the date and place of the meeting and according to what we have been informed, the appointment will most likely take place within the last week of April, in Geneva and not in New York, as was the original intention. .

With the closing of the appointment, a new tour of the UN Secretary General's special envoy, Jane Hall Luth, is expected to begin in Cyprus for a new round of contacts with the two leaders, preparing the ground for the informal five-party meeting. This is probably expected in the first ten days of March.

At the same time in Nicosia there is intense mobility. Over the weekend, President Anastasiadis telephoned Emanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen. According to the information of the Government Spokesman Kyriakos Kousiou, in the context of their regular contacts, the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis had a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emanuel Macron yesterday at noon.

During their conversation, the two Presidents exchanged views on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, in relation to the expected convening of the informal “5 + 1” meeting, the purpose of which will be to reach an agreement on re-launching the negotiation process.
