In a written statement, the chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Interior and AKEL MP, Aristos Damianou, comments on the announcement of the Ministry of Interior, which said that it is irresponsible for MPs and parties to request the publication of the local Akamas plan at this stage. Mr. Damianou points out that this report “constitutes an insult to the parliamentary institutions, to the House of Representatives itself”. He notes that “the refusal of the Minister of Interior to accept parliamentary control is a sign of arrogance and eccentricity.”
The written statement of Aristos Damianos:
The announcement of the Minister of Interior with which he calls irresponsible the request of the Chairmen of the Committees of Interior and Environment that the prepared Akama Local Plan is submitted by the competent public officials, constitutes an insult to the parliamentary institutions, to the House of Representatives.
The Interior Minister's refusal to accept parliamentary scrutiny over an issue of paramount environmental and urban importance, such as the protection of Akamas, is a sign of arrogance and bigotry. It reinforces the suspicions expressed both in Parliament and in public.
The exercise of parliamentary control, accountability and transparency are principles and values that must be respected by all, and above all by the respective Ministers.
