The implementation of the legislation for the production of only one product in the Republic of Cyprus called halloumi is out of the question and this must meet the specifications of the Protected Designation of Origin, clarified the Legal Service once again, this time yesterday meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture. A representative of the Legal Service even warned that in case of violation of the European regulation governing the quality systems of agricultural products and on the basis of which halloumi was registered as a PDO, the Commission could initiate infringement proceedings against the Member State. In particular, he stated that in case of non-implementation of the regulation, the possibility of the PDO falling into disuse will be examined. & Nbsp;
It is noted that the Legal Service clarified in its opinion that a product to bring halloumi and to be marketed domestically but also exported to other Member States and third countries must meet PDO standards.
At the special meeting of the Commission, which took place after the meeting of President Anastasiadis, but before meeting with the others involved in the process of making halloumi, sheep, goats and cattle breeders, the Ministers of Agriculture and Trade referred to the procedures as decided in the Presidential./p>

The Minister of Agriculture, Costas Kadis, stated that President Anastasiadis said that the legislation would be implemented. He added, however, that a process is needed to start PDO production. An effort, he said, is for the market to function and for PDO production to begin. The message is clear, he noted, to add only PDO halloumi must be produced. Mr. Kadis stated that the intention of the government is to proceed with minor changes. The characteristics of the dossier that the Republic of Cyprus will discuss for their immediate modification concern the races, the shape, the weight and the diploma. He further described it as a fairy tale that cheesemakers could not sell cheese under another name at bargain prices. The aim of the government, he stressed, is to implement the opinion, to integrate the control system under one organization. “There will be no doubt that the control will not be done properly. we made a huge effort for the PDO and we will not let it be lost “, said Mr. Kadis with determination. & nbsp;
The Minister of Commerce, Natasa Pileidou, stated that she clarifies the landscape for the need for all cheesemakers to join the PDO. Any delay, he noted, is purely procedural. The intention of the government, he said, is to increase milk production, stressing that those products that do not comply with the provisions of the PDO, will not be called halloumi. He explained that all checks for the PDO halloumi will be done by the Bureau Veritas. Products that do not have a PDO mark will not be called halloumi. He noted that in the brand for products aimed at European markets, but also third countries can be used next to the PDO logo. & Nbsp;
Referring to the market controls carried out by the Ministry of Commerce, Ms. Pileidou noted that in six dairies the milk quota was slightly violated, while there are deviations in humidity. He added that a letter was first sent to the cheesemakers and depending on the response received, a fine will be imposed.Following the clear opinion of the Legal Service, MPs call for the immediate implementation of the PDO regulation. The chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Giannakis Gabriel, said that the only way for farmers to survive is to implement the legislation. He explained that due to the delay observed in the implementation of the regulation at the end, KD will face European sanctions. DISY MP, Charalambos Pazaros, said that his party requests the implementation of the opinion of the Legal Service, while he noted that “he considers the issue over”. According to Mr. Pazaros, “all the questions and opposing views that have been expressed from time to time have been clarified.” & Nbsp;
DIKO MP, Christos Orfanidis, asked “when there is a European regulation which provides and concerns the Protected Designation of Origin, when there is legislation, when there is an opinion from 2006, when there is a recent opinion that the current Attorney General reaffirms regarding halloumi, what are we waiting for to implement the legislation? “. & nbsp;
DIPA MP, Alekos Tryfonidis, stated that” it is clear to the Cypriot people that after the implementation of the legislation, another product from Halloumi PDO “, to note that” everything else that will be released will have a different name and content “.
Disagreements about the application
The agrarian movement called for the immediate implementation of the legislation on PDO halloumi on the basis of the opinion of the Legal Service. The same was demanded by the sheep and goat breeders, who referred to the serious problems they face and if the legislation is not implemented immediately, they will not survive.
