The Labor Inspection Department (TEE) recently launched a campaign to check the compliance of various products available on the Cypriot market with the Chemical Substances Legislation. p>
(a) plastic toys and articles for Phthalates and
(b) thermal papers for Bisphenol A ( BRA).
Phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA) are substances characterized as toxic to reproduction and included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51, 52 and 66 respectively) .
According to these restrictions, they must not be placed on the market:
(1) Toys and plastic articles containing certain Phthalates in concentrations greater than 0.1% by weight of plasticized material and
(2) Thermal papers containing Bisphenol A (BPA) in concentrations greater than 0.02% by weight.
From the results of the laboratory analysis of the samples carried out by the State General Chemistry, a total of 14 non-compliant products emerged, which are shown here.
Specifically, in the 13 plastic toys and objects shown in table A, high concentrations of Phthalates were detected and in the thermal paper shown in table B, Bisphenol A (BPA) was detected in concentrations higher than those determined by the legislation.
The Labor Inspection Department informs the public that it has already begun the process of immediate withdrawal of non-compliant products from the Cypriot market. At the same time, non-compliant products will be notified to the Rapid Information Exchange System for Non-Food Safety (RAPEX) of the European Union.
