Five Greek Cypriots and two Turkish Cypriots missing persons identified in 2024according to the statistics of the Commission for the Investigation of Missing Persons (ICP), while skeletal remains were found this year in 49 excavations, 15 wells and one site with bones.
According to the statistics of the ICP, as published on the website of and processed by the KYPE, five Greek Cypriots and two Turkish Cypriots missing persons were identified this year until July 31. The figures also indicate that this year 16 people were identified at excavation sites, seven people related to the DEA list were identified, while four other identifications have been made.
Last year 15 Greek Cypriots and one Turkish Cypriot were identified, 29 people were identified in excavation sites, 16 individuals related to the IEA list were identified and three other identifications were made.
In 2022, four Greek Cypriots and one Turkish Cypriot were identified. The highest number of identifications of Greek Cypriots, 140, was in 2014, a year when 17 Turkish Cypriots were also identified, while the highest number of identifications of Turkish Cypriots, 36, was in 2018. In the same year, 35 Greek Cypriots were identified.
In 2015, 159 people were identified in excavation sites, which is the largest number since 2005 for which information is given, while from 2006 to 2024, a total of 234 cases are recorded that have been analyzed and are not related to the DEA. From 2006 to this year, 216 other identifications are also recorded, which correspond to the people identified by the DEA, but not included in the official list of missing persons.
According to the same data, until July 31 this year skeletal remains were found in 49 excavations, 15 wells and one bone site. Last year, skeletal remains were found in 69 excavations, 28 wells and four sites with bones.
In 2005, 63 people were found in excavation sites. According to the data, skeletal remains were found at the same time in 16 excavations and 13 sites with bones. It is noted that the number corresponding to the year 2005 includes excavations and exhumations carried out by the Turkish Cypriots prior to the existing program and that the bones that had been identified were handed over to the IEA in 2006.
In 2006 they were on the list of DEA 2002 missing (1510 Greek Cypriots and 492 Turkish Cypriots) while by 2024 1196 have been exhumed and 1051 identified, of which 756 Greek Cypriots and 295 Turkish Cypriots. 754 E/k and 197 T/k are still missing.
