“Another tragic fatal occupational accident has shocked Cyprus, another worker has not returned to his family from his work”, states PEO in a statement.
The PEO calls on the Government, on the occasion of the new fatal work accident, to properly staff the Labor Inspection Department and “to take all appropriate measures to carry out its supervisory role for the implementation of the legislation”.
“Another tragic fatal accident at work has shocked Cyprus, another worker has not returned to his family from work”, says PEO in a statement.
It also states that “the Department of Labor Inspection, as the competent government department charged with the task of implementing the legislation, has a responsibility to crack down on the illegality and irresponsibility of employers who put profit above the life and skill of their employees”.
“The causes and details of how the new fatal work accident happened are being investigated but it is certain that some employers with the aim of excessive profit choose illegal employment and not taking the necessary Safety and Health measures, thus putting profits above human life”, he adds.
The negligence, according to PEO, “and the non-implementation by a large portion of employers of the obligations provided for by the legislation, is unfortunately also due to the weakness of the Ministry of Labor to exercise effective and systematic control of workplaces”.
Furthermore, PEO calls “once again on employers to assume the responsibilities assigned to them by the legislation and to take all necessary measures to protect their workers”.
“Employees have the right after work to return to their families healthy, safe and fit”, adds.
Finally, the PEO supports the compulsory training of all workers in the construction industry and the issuance of the Save-Pass card as a criterion for employment in the industry, with the aim of reduction of occupational accidents that plague the construction sector.
