Declaration for the 98th anniversary of the KKK-AKEL – Determined to move forward and upward again
The Fifteenth of August is a special milestone in the History of Cyprus as the birth act of the Cypriot Left. The founding congress of the Communist Party of Cyprus on August 15, 1926 marked the first time that the world of work came to the political fore and claimed its place as a protagonist of History.
As the party claims, in an era of colonial slavery, savage impoverishment, and obscurantism, the KKK planted the seed of communist ideology and the ideals of internationalism, solidarity, peace, and social equality. He founded the first guilds and the trade union movement, organized the first labor struggles. He drew in theory and in practice the line of unity of Greeks and Turks of Cyprus that became our compass until today. He proposed revolutionary demands for the time such as gender equality, maternity protection, the prohibition of child labor and free education, the separation of Church and State, the distribution of church and waqf land to the landless, the cancellation of the debts of the disenfranchised peasantry. . He inspired the world of Cypriot intellectuals and culture to join the struggles of poverty. AKEL pays tribute to the heroic communists of that time who rooted the tree of the Cypriot Left.
In all these decades, the KKK-AKEL went through terrible trials and fierce warfare, faced small and big defeats and disappointments. But he always found the strength and the way to cope and come out stronger and connected to the people. Today, AKEL is determined to overcome the difficulties, to respond to the challenges of the time, to move forward and upward again. He works hard and boldly to correct mistakes and shortcomings. It modernizes its forms of communication, action and organization. It is on a path of continuous renewal and daily contact with the people and primarily with the world of work. It inspires and reorganizes struggles and claims for the contemporary demands of the great social majority in work, education, health, social security. It builds solid partnerships and alliances of principles with forces and people from the progressive space, in order to change the relationships and things in our country. He continues to lead the joint struggle of the Greek and Turkish people, in the fight for freedom, reunification and peace for our homeland. It unites – as dictated by its ideology and history – the struggles of today with the vision for tomorrow, the world of socialism and peace. anniversary – all the members and friends of the Party, the world of the Left and more broadly the workers of our country.
