At 50%-55% occupancy rates in April in hotels, the President PASYXE estimates – somewhat reduced compared to the same period last year the flow of bookings – The British and Israeli markets and the personnel issue

At 50% to 55%occupancies in the hotel accommodation of Cyprus are expected to fluctuate in April, according to the President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association Thanos Michailidis >, who noted that about 90% of the hotels are operational and very few will open around the end of April.

The flow of bookings for 2024, said Mr. Michaelidis, it is somewhat reduced compared to the same period last year, adding that if there is no change, this year the year will close with a lower occupancy than 2023.

Specifically he said that the occupancy rates from the beginning of the year until April are reduced and he noted that the biggest difference occurred in April, due to the fact that, as he explained, the Catholic Easter this year was in March, while the Orthodox Easter will be much later, i.e. in May.

Now he said “that we have entered April which is also the first month of the summer season we see that the flow has improved relatively but we are still not in a position to judge how the season will close, while there remains a difference from 2023”.

He added that most bookings come from the UK, central Europe, France, Germany, and Poland.

Mr. Michailidis reminded that traffic from Israel has not yet started due to the problem. Israel continued, it was a very good market for Paphos but also for Cyprus in general.

Next, the president of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association also referred to Britain's economy which is experiencing some difficulties with the result, as he said, that it is somewhat negatively affecting the demand for vacations. We will have to monitor the progress of the bookings every month to see how it will develop, he added.

When asked about May, Mr. Michaelidis said that the occupancy rates are somewhat low, but there are also last-minute reservations.

Regarding the issue of the difficulty in finding staff the president of PASYXE Cyprus admitted that there is an improvement in the speed with which applications are processed.

He also expressed the hope that this speed in processing applications will continue. The lack of staffing continued, it is a global problem that we too must face.

Asked whether the tourist product has been upgraded, Mr. Michaelidis stated that no significant changes have been made, mentioning that we are passing through the two years after Covid-19 which was a very difficult period for the industry. Important and substantial investments, he said, have not been made beyond the maintenance of the units so that they are in good condition.

He also pointed out that the costs have gone up too much and any renovations are very expensive. Indicatively, he said that operating costs last year were very high, as a result reducing the profitability of the industry and limiting the investment margin. Improvement projects are being carried out but no significant investments have been made, he added.

When asked whether Cyprus serves all groups of special tourism interests, Mr. Michaelidis answered positively, noting however that there is a lot of room for improvement and targeting for more exploitation of these special types of tourism.

Especially, he continued, this could also help the pre-summer periods from November to April so that there is more demand for sports tourism or tourism of tours.

Mr. Michaelidis mentioned that all areas of Cyprus are suitable for family holidays, noting that each area has its own advantages such as the area of the free Famagusta, which has very good beaches, the area of Paphos which has great archaeological interest and interesting hinterland etc., he concluded.
