The notification of the Commissioner came into force on December 30 of Motor Vehicles, to determine horizontal and vertical markings for permitted areas for the circulation of Personal Mobility Devices (e-scooters), in a square or on a pedestrian street.
According to a statement from the GTP, “the notification defines the horizontal and vertical markings for permitted areas for the circulation of personal mobility devices (e-scooters), in a square or on a pedestrian street and in addition, the notification includes vertical markings, which define legal public spaces parking personal mobility devices'.
It is recalled that, based on the relevant Law, the circulation of personal mobility devices in a square or pedestrian street is only allowed if there is a specific sign which is placed after a decision of the relevant Municipality or Community and after an assessment of the impact on road safety, especially for the benefit of pedestrians.
As the announcement states, "the vertical and horizontal markings included in the notification, are an integral part of the Road Traffic Code, based on the powers granted to the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles by Regulation 71 of on Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulations of 1984 to (No. 3) of 2022.
According to the notification, the e-scooters Traffic Area refers to roads on the carriageway of motor vehicles, which have a speed limit of up to 30 kilometers per hour, on a cycle path, cycle lane or in an area that is an extension of a cycle path (space shared by cyclists & pedestrians). . In a square or pedestrian street, traffic only takes place after a decision of the relevant municipality or community.
The age of users is determined at 14 years and above and in the event that the personal mobility device, by design, allows the transportation of a passenger, he should be twelve (12) years of age and above.
The means of personal protection user requirements include mandatory helmet use and mandatory clothing with appropriate fluorescent insignia and minimum device equipment includes brake system, front lights & back, bell, tires.
The maximum speed of the device is set at 20 kilometers per hour and when users of personal mobility devices move in squares or pedestrian streets, they should not exceed the speed of 10 kilometers per hour.
Finally, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works "urges users of personal mobility devices to observe the Road Traffic Code and to give priority to pedestrians when driving in squares and pedestrian streets" ;.
