The Office of the Commissioner of the Environment has started actions and synergies for the creation of climate neutral communities, starting with the communities of Tellyria and the Valley of the Xeros and Diarizos Rivers, said the responsible Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou, in last night's event for “Earth Hour”.

As she said in her greeting at the event organized by her Office in collaboration with other agencies, in Faneromeni Square, in Nicosia, the creation of climate-neutral communities aims at a vertical reduction of pollutants, while there is an intention to convert them into a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

He said at the same time that the Energy Office of Cyprus, after being assigned by the present government, is already cooperating with similar actions and actions with Municipalities and is preparing a climate neutrality strategy for all communities in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

As he added, further, the Office of the Environment Commissioner has launched actions for the adoption of policies concerning physical and bioclimatic construction, the protection of the natural and cultural landscape, as well as for the protection of our built and intangible heritage, the protection of the coasts and participates in actions to protect and strengthen biodiversity.

The Commissioner for the Environment began her greeting by expressing my shock at last night's deadly terrorist attack in Moscow with victims of unsuspecting civilians, as well as the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East neighboring Cyprus and in Ukraine, noting that in the world, nothing is away from us and that everything concerns us.

He underlined that “Earth Hour” reminds us of our inseparable and non-negotiable relationship with the environment and that urgent action is required at the global level, with the unity of citizens, Governments, businesses, for a more sustainable world and a prosperous society in absolute harmony with nature”.

Ms. Theodosiou referred to the recent climate report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), where it is recorded that in 2023 new (negative) records were set in every indicator: record temperatures and gas levels greenhouse gas, ocean acidification, rising sea levels, retreating glaciers.

He also highlighted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' reports that the planet is on the “brink of destruction” while “fossil fuel pollution it is causing an unprecedented climate chaos”.

As he pointed out, the above, however, is the symptom. “The cause and most of the increase in temperature is attributed to our own human activities, such as greenhouse gas emissions, continued unsustainable production, overexploitation of resources, unsustainable management of nature and lands, overconsumption, the non-use of RES and environmentally sustainable means of transport”, he added.
