Clarifies the Department of the Environment regarding the separation rate of materials for recycling coming from Green Dot – It amounts to 50-60% and not 15%, it is reported
The percentage of separation of materials for recycling amounts to 50-60% >coming from Green Dot, and not at 15% as stated in a related publication, the Environment Department says in a statement. According to what he mentions, this percentage is within the framework of achieving our obligations in relation to the European Directives.
Responding to a publication of the newspaper “Ο Phileleftheros”, the Department of Environment states that the report made for recycling a rate of 15% of the materials that end up at the OEDA of Kosis concerns mixed waste, which ends up in the unit. On the contrary, he clarifies, the percentage of separation of materials for recycling coming from Green Dot amounts to 50-60%. “This percentage is within the framework of achieving our obligations in relation to the European Directives”, he notes.
With reference to the publication, the Department of the Environment states that after the fire and the total destruction of the licensed ECOBALANCE waste management unit in July 2023, the collective system of Green Dot requested the approval of the Department of the Environment for the receipt and management by the OEDA Kosi unit of recyclable PMD packaging collected through the collective system from the provinces of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta.
This request has arisen due to the fact that there are no other licensed units that can receive the recyclable PMD packaging collected in the 3 provinces. It is noted that the only licensed unit for receiving PMD is in Limassol and according to its capacity serves the provinces of Limassol and Paphos.
Regarding recyclable packaging paper, Green Dot has made arrangements to receive it from licensed recycling facilities.
“Recognizing the need to take immediate measures after the fire with the aim of continuing recycling, the Department of the Environment approved the emergency receipt of PMD waste from the OEDA Kosi unit. The aim is to continue the mechanical sorting of the materials with the possibility of separating them and promoting them for management in recycling plants abroad and at the same time their safe management taking into account the risks for fires in relation to other solutions, he notes.
In addition, it is reported that the quantities of packaging waste that end up at the Kosi Waste Management Center from the collective system are less than 10,000 tons per year in relation to the total quantities collected by the system which amount to 75,000 tons per year (commercial and domestic).
According to Green Dot, the packaging waste at the OEDA unit of Kosis is not delivered free of charge and the collective system does not receive income from the value of these materials, it is noted in the announcement of the Department of the Environment.
As it states , although finding permanent solutions is time-consuming, the Department is in constant contact with the collective system providing support in order to immediately proceed with the appropriate procedures which will fully serve the achievement of the recycling goals based on the European directives.
“The Department of the Environment, as a constant supporter and perennial promoter of recycling, makes every possible effort, within the framework of its responsibilities, to maintain and strengthen the process. Its aim is to protect the environment, but also to change and consolidate the mentality that is gradually developing in Cyprus with so much effort, he concludes.
