The principle of the Government's policy is that culture can have multiplying benefits in the development and strengthening of education, while it can be an important contributing factor in areas such as tourism and the economic development and progress of the country, said the Deputy Minister of Culture in her greeting , Vasiliki Kassianidou, at the event-tribute to the late teacher and folklorist, Nearchos Cleridis, which took place in Agros.

Mrs. Kassianidou said in her greeting that the Deputy Ministry of Culture has now assumed responsibility for the protection of cultural heritage, both material and tangible, but also the support of modern culture. He pointed out that the principle of the Government's policy is that culture can have multiplying benefits in the development and strengthening of our education, while it can be an important contributing factor in areas such as tourism and the economic development and progress of our country.

That is why, he continued, and “as a Deputy Ministry, we support actions that highlight our cultural heritage, which is the generative cause for the revitalization of the countryside, while it is considered, at the same time, a way of preserving our cultural identity”.

One such action, said Mrs. Kassianidou, is today's, which honors the great teacher and folklorist, Nearchos Cleridis.

“The protection and promotion of our traditional/popular cultural heritage, which benefited so much from the work of Nearchos Cleridis, is of course an integral part of this effort,” he noted, adding that “for this reason, we are grateful for the action of the Nearchos Cleridis Cultural Foundation , which has been established in his honor, and for the effort he makes for the continuous promotion of cultural, intellectual and academic progress in Cyprus”.

The Deputy Minister of Culture noted that “the highlighting of our cultural identity gives added value to an area, is a platform for the creation of social and economic value and contributes to the creation of new forms of active citizen participation”.

He stated that one of the main representatives of this policy is the Foundation for the Culture of Mountain Communities, which was founded on the basis of the National Strategic Development of Mountain Communities (ESAOK).

He explained that his mission is to record, save, study, develop and highlight the history, cultural heritage, education, letters, arts and more broadly the entire cultural creation of the Troodos mountain communities.

< p data-block-key="8rgin">At the same time, he continued, his main aim is for the cultural “capital” of Troodos to be studied, protected and highlighted, supporting the local economy, integrating the cultural heritage and history of Troodos into local activities and upgrading the life context of the area's residents of them.

Mrs. Kassianidou stated that paying due respect to spiritual people who dedicated their lives to the service of letters is an imposed obligation and a minimum recompense for their great contribution to society.

He noted that Nearchos Clerides, this tireless worker of the spirit, deserves special mention and is a role model, since he fought persistently and in adverse circumstances, to realize his dream, to become a teacher.

“He developed a rich educational and social work, offering the best, not only to his birthplace, Agro, but also to the whole country”, said the Deputy Minister of Culture, adding that he is one of the most prolific Cypriot authors, having written published dozens of independent works and hundreds of studies.

The Deputy Minister of Culture stated that Nearchos Clerides, as a genuine eupatridis, dedicated his life to the spiritual rise of his homeland and contributed the most in the dissemination and preservation of popular culture. “With effort and dedication he collected, studied and published folk songs, fairy tales, morals, customs and legends of our island”, said Ms. Kassianidou.

The event was co-organized by the Troodos Mountain Communities Cultural Foundation and the “Nearchos K. Cleridis” Cultural Foundation.
