The Ministry of Shipping welcomes today's 11th anniversary of World Maritime Day, which is celebrated every year on June 25, with Deputy Minister of Shipping Vassilis Dimitriadis emphasizing that Cyprus recognizes their offer not only with wishes but also with actions and substantial initiatives. internationally.

A State Department statement said it considers International Maritime Day an opportunity for industry to raise awareness of civil society and highlight the vital role of seafarers and their contribution to the supply chain and the global economy.

In his statements, the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Mr. Demitriadis, stated that “Cyprus celebrates the World Navy Day and recognizes their offer not only with wishes but also with deeds and substantial initiatives both nationally and internationally.” He noted that the Cypriot shipping is a leader and shows in practice its social sensitivity “with facilities for crew changes, with practical solutions worldwide and with vaccination coverage of seafarers.”

The announcement notes that the pandemic has turned into a humanitarian crisis for the seafaring profession as sailors due to restrictive measures were forced to stay stranded on ships for months. From the first moment of the pandemic, Cyprus recognized seafarers as essential workers and created a procedural framework for crew changes. These measures resulted in the repatriation and change of crews in the ports of the Republic in excess of 20,000 sailors.

In addition, our country presented in international and European steps a proposal concerning the formation of a global vaccination program for seafarers, which was welcomed with its adoption in an official resolution by the International Labor Organization.

At the national level, Cyprus has established a framework for vaccination coverage of all seafarers serving on Cypriot-flagged ships as well as ships managed by companies based in Cyprus.
