Deputy Shipping: Satisfaction with results of IMO Commission work

Cyprus welcomes the amendments of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and welcomes the progress in the ongoing review of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

Specifically , as stated in a statement by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, "Cyprus, as a Mediterranean island country, welcomes the approval of the draft amendments to Annex VI of MARPOL, which will enter into full force on May 1 2025, regarding the designation of the Mediterranean as a Sulfur Oxide Emissions Control Area.

«This is a very important development that will contribute to the protection of the environment and public health through the reduction of harmful emissions from ships', it added.

In addition, the announcement notes, Cyprus expresses its satisfaction with the progress made regarding the ongoing review of the initial strategy of the International Maritime Organization, for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, "despite the fact that revised targets for 2030 and 2050 are under review, along with the implementation of a complementary "package" for the revised strategy, which is expected to be approved at MEPC 80».
