The precision in the market, due to rising inflation, does not prevent bank customers from seeking loans, mainly for consumer purposes, despite the fact that the purchasing power of wages is declining. The retail banking sector is still showing resilience, despite the general negative climate created by the energy crisis, with implications for rising commodity and service prices and consequently lower value for household incomes.
The banking staffs of the two major banks, Bank of Cyprus and Hellenic Bank, are monitoring the issue closely and see that, at least until April, the psychology of existing and potential customers has not been affected. Demand for car and real estate loans continues to grow, despite uncertainty about the duration of the war in Ukraine, which is likely to increase.
In Cyprus, it seems that the precision and the fluid environment due to the war do not affect the Cypriots as much, at least for the time being, in contrast to Greece, where the demand for housing and consumer loans has started to decrease. According to a report on the website euro2day, the first negative consequences of the accuracy were reflected in April in the demand for housing, consumer and car loans.

Of course, what is emphasized is that for the coming months it is unknown how the demand for loans will develop and they see that, if uncertainty and accuracy continue, there will be a conservative attitude of customers and therefore fewer loan applications.
At the same wavelength is the assessment of Hellenic Bank, which sees the retail sector not currently affected by the uncertain environment, with the picture being positive for the first quarter of the year. April, as noted, is at last year's levels but the concern is whether there will continue to be disbursements of new loans in the coming months. What is emphasized, however, is that the use of cards is particularly high, both for payments through POS terminals and through withdrawals from ATMs.
