The Democratic Party, in a statement issued, states that it considers unacceptable, authoritarian and wrong the decision of the Ministry of Education to prosecute the artist George Gabriel, for paintings he painted in his spare time and not while on duty.
The statement added that “the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression in any form is a fundamental human right of every citizen and must be respected.”
“This expression cannot be prosecuted and the state institutions cannot be turned into tools for violating freedom of artistic expression,” it said.
The prosecution of Gabriel, the announcement concludes, sends completely wrong, anti-democratic and anti-European messages to the wider society and the government must immediately withdraw the accusations.
