Discontent and strong reactions in the European Union for Orban's visit to Moscow

“Ending the war in strong>Ukraine is the main priority of the Hungarian Presidency in the EU” was the message of the president of Hungary, Viktor Orban, who is under heavy fire from  strong>European Union for choosing to visit Moscowwhere he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

His spokesman, Bertalan Havassi, said Orban was on a “peace mission” apparently referring to in the war in Ukraine.

Orbán's presence in Moscow has provoked strong reactions from European officials since this semester the Hungarian prime minister holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

In his post on X, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, wrote: “The EU rotating presidency does not have a mandate to work with Russia on behalf of the EU. The European Council it is clear: Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. No discussion about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine”.


For his part, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Orban is in Moscow for an “exclusively” bilateral visit for which he has “no mandate” from the EU.

More mild in her reaction was the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who contented herself with declaring that “appeasement will not stop Putin. Only unity and determination will pave the way for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

Earlier this week, Orban visited the Kiev, saying “a quick ceasefire could be used to accelerate peace talks”.

Tuesday's (2/7) visit to Kiev was his first in 12 years, if and met Putin repeatedly during this period.
