Dissatisfaction with the new increases that P&O Maritime Logistics intends to impose from January 1, the company that exclusively offers marine services to ships in the port of Limassol, is expressed by the Association of Maritime Agents of Cyprus, warning that the new increases will bring “chain increases” in trade and consumers.

In today's announcement, the Association expects the Ministry of Transport to take “even the minimum necessary and required actions to avoid a new cycle of abusive increases”.

According to the statement, the company announced to port users its intention “to impose new unjustified increases from January 1, 2024 after cumulative increases of 33% have been imposed over the past two years.”

“The Association of Maritime Agents of Cyprus warns that the new increases will bring about chain increases to the trade and consumers”, the announcement states.

According to the Association, despite the fact that based on the calculation formula in the contract with the state where the current increases are foreseen (Indexation) no right arises for new increases in the ports for the coming year, the company relies on a clause in the contract which claims that gives it the right for new increases in the fees it charges ships.

“It is expected that the competent Ministry of Transport after receiving a timely letter of protest from the Association of Maritime Agents of Cyprus with notification to all involved bodies, will take at least the bare minimum in the necessary and required actions to avoid a new cycle of abusive increases in the ports that burden the already high inflationary trends of the economy”, conclude the shipping agents.
