Preliminary moves aimed at preventing a new shipwreck in the Cyprus issue are being made by the United Nations with a view to convening an informal Pentagon Conference. At this stage, the International Organization seeks to create conditions for the participants to reach a common text, if possible before the meeting.
This is the mission of the UN official, Jane Hall Luth, who is expected today in Cyprus and tomorrow will have separate meetings with President Anastasiadis and the occupation leader, Ersin Tatar. Ms. Luth will try to agree on the joint statement of the Conference, in order to avoid the possibility that those involved during the Pentagon will get lost in the και translation and lead to failure.

It is known that G.G. flirts from the beginning with reaching a strategic agreement, a development with which Nicosia agrees even though there are many risks. The announcement may be considered a strategic agreement, but that will depend on the content. What is certain is that what is announced will be binding for everyone and will determine the next steps.
At the same time, information indicates that various aspects indicate that there should be “flexibility” of those involved in the content of the discussions, although it is clarified that they should be “respected”, building on the work that has already been achieved ( «Existing body of work»). It is clear that attempts are being made to open a “window” for expanding discussions with new ideas, as Occupying Turkey insists. At the same time, the well-known method of “constructive ambiguity” is returning from the British side, mainly in terms of the nomenclature of the solution.
The planning is like the informal conference taking place in the first ten days of February, as it is obvious that a result will be sought before the March European Council, during which the Euro-Turkish issues will be discussed.
