Kane Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, in southwestern Fukuoka, Japan, the same year that the Wright brothers first flew, and Marie Curie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
Tanaka was relatively well, until recently, living in a nursing home, where she enjoyed soft drinks and chocolate, playing board games, and solving math problems.
In her later years, Tanaka ran several businesses, including a traditional pasta shop and a rice cake shop. She married Video Tanaka a century ago, in 1922, giving birth to four children and adopting a fifth.
She had planned to take part in the Tokyo Olympics 2021 in a wheelchair, but the pandemic prevented her from doing so.
When she was recognized by the Guinness World Record as the oldest person alive in 2019, she was asked what moment she was the happiest in life. Her answer: “Now”. Her daily routine at the time included waking up at 0600, studying mathematics in the afternoons, and practicing calligraphy.
