ECDC responsibilities expanded - Extension approved by European Parliament

The Plenary Session of the European Parliament approved the extension of the powers of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) as well as the strengthening of the European Union legislative framework for crisis preparedness and response.

According to the results of the vote, the proposal to extend the mandate of the ECDC was approved by 598 votes to 84, with 13 abstentions.

The proposal envisages that the ECDC mandate will include some serious non-communicable diseases in the future, such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, diabetes and mental illness.

Parliament also calls on the Member States to draw up national preparedness and response plans and stresses the need for national governments to communicate comparable and high quality data in a timely manner.

The proposal to strengthen the legislative framework for crisis prevention, preparedness and response in the face of serious future cross-border health threats was adopted by 594 votes to 85, with 16 abstentions.

According to the text, Parliament calls for clear procedures to be established and for transparency regarding EU co-procurement procedures and related market agreements to be ensured.

In a Twitter post, Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou said she was looking forward to a quick and productive dialogue with the rapporteurs of the relevant reports, MEPs Veronica Trigier-Lenoir and Joanna Kopczynska, and the Slovenian Presidency for the Presidency. by the end of the year.
